Entry/Exit System (EES)
Schiphol International Airport Arrival

Crossing the EU Border at Schiphol with a Non-EU Passport

Important immigration detailsLook for it here in the "Members List"

European Entry/Exit System (EES)

  • The Schengen area is collecting entry/exit data (biometrics like fingerprints/face) under the Entry/Exit System (EES); this is separate from visa rules and DOES NOT require prior application.

ETIAS (Coming Later)

  • ETIAS will start operations in the last quarter of 2026. No action is required from travellers at this point. The European Union will inform about the specific date for the start of ETIAS several months prior to its launch.. Once active, most U.S. travelers will need to apply online before entering any Schengen/associated country.

Upon Arrival
  1. Follow the Signs: Walk towards passport control and follow the signs for "Non-EU Passports".
  2. Use the Kiosk: Passengers aged 12 and older will be directed to an EES self-service kiosk. Scan your passport, have your photo taken, and provide fingerprints (usually four of your right hand).
  3. Pass through Border Control: After registering at the kiosk, you will be directed to either an automated eGate or a manned border control booth to finalize entry with an officer.
  4. Exceptions: Children under the age of 12 and passengers with specific disabilities cannot use the kiosks and must go directly to a staffed border control booth for assistance
Helpful Instructions

STEP 1

  1. Put the passport on the upper glass panel, the lower is only for fingerprints. After putting passport on panel, process will begin.
  2. Use only your right hand four fingers, not the thumb.Press firmly against the glass. It is greasy and not wiped often. Keep the fingers together, not splayed apart. You may get a retry message here.Very important....DO NOT MOVE YOUR FINGERS WHILE IT SCANSHold them hard against glass, fingers closed, zero movements. You will not see any light under them.

Once it finishes, it will instruct you to follow route 1 or 2. One of these will force a human border guard check-in; the other will fast-track you to the actual entry machine.

    STEP 2

If you are fortunate, you get machine track (it's supposedly faster). There weren't any attendants, just automated machines and some guards beyond them.

Feed your passport in as shown on the machine's diagram (it doesn't have the same glass panel as the first machine).

Then it asks for fingerprints. Same procedure. Right hand, 4 fingers, closed, pressed tight on glass.

I FAILED THAT CHECK TWICE! Again, I think glass is dirty as I was very careful. But I refused to join the long human line.   I tried a third time, very careful hand placement, zero movements  and SUCCESS!

Alternatively, try swapping to the machine in the next aisle.

Once through immigration, you can go to the luggage carousel to collect your luggage, then proceed to the general terminal.

Apple Cake (Dutch Appeltaart
WINKEL 43: Noordermarkt 43, 1015 NA Amsterdam
Amsterdam’s ever-popular de Jordaan quarter
The crumb in this cake is light, flaky and moist. It is NOT a sweet cake. Served with whip cream.
They serve meals here too. Small venue with outdoor seating.  Be careful where you sit. There’s another cafe next to it.

Kroket/Croquet (or Bitterballen)
Try CAFE PAR HASARD, located in one of Amsterdam's most beautiful neighborhoods on Ceintuurbaan 113-115 1.5 km walk south of the Rijksmuseum.

Or EETSALON VAN DOBBEN near the Flower Market & Rembrandt Square, Korte Reguliersdwarsstraat 5-7-9

If you are planning a trip to the Netherlands, there is one gastronomic delicacy you absolutely must try: the famous kroket. This Dutch delicacy is an irresistible croquette made from a combination of finely selected meats and enriched with a creamy roux, meat broth, spices and herbs. It is a carefully prepared mixture that has earned a prominent place in Dutch culinary culture, perfect for those seeking a succulent and quick lunch. Eat it with mustard on white bread!  But watch-out, they’re hot when first served.  The Dutch version of pizza burn.heineken museum

French Fries
Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx, The Best Friteshuis...
Did you know the Dutch have perfected French Fries to a science, maybe even an art form? The best french Fries can be found in the center of the city at Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx near the flower market and behind the main pedestrian shopping street, Kalverstraat 33, Amsterdam.  Just Fries!

De Frietfabriek (near our hotel)
And if you don’t want to travel to the city, here’s one very close to our hotel and training club - it is De Frietfabriek, Nieuwe Kalfjeslaan 1, 1181 CA Amstelveen.  Excellent fries and snacks.

If not at a bakery fresh, believe it or not, then the best stroopwafel can be found at supermarkets.

Tulip Bulbs
There are two clearly marked kinds of bulbs for sale: those that can be imported to the US, and those that cannot. Some may claim that their bulbs are legal to take to the USA. However, they must have a metal tag that shows up on a scanner.

TRAVEL

TRAVEL FROM THE USA
For flights, you’re welcome to choose your preferred airline and departure airport—this is yours to arrange, secure, and purchase. Since summer is a popular travel season, we recommend booking sooner rather than later. Don't forget about your passport, your expiration date should extend 6 months past your return date.  If you need a new or to renew a passport - best to do that now so you avoid wait times.  PASSPORT APP HERE

To ensure you arrive in time, you’ll need to book your flight from the U.S. to depart no later than Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Most flights departing the U.S. will arrive at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport early on the morning of Thursday, July 23.

The official end of our scheduled program of planned events will be after dinner, late evening on July 29, with final hotel departure/check-out on Wednesday, July 29.
- If you secured a spot for optional training on our departure day (July 29th) you may want to stay in this hotel longer.
